Biography

A central figure of nineteenth-century German musical life, Reinecke conducted the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra for thirty-five years and taught composition and piano at the Leipzig Conservatory, where his students included Grieg, Albéniz, Janáček, Weingartner, and Bruch. As a composer he produced symphonies, concertos, chamber music, and operas, but his most enduring legacy in piano teaching is a series of sonatinas — particularly the two of Op. 136 and the six of Op. 47 — which remain staples of early-intermediate sonata-form study.
