Biography

An eccentric figure who occupied a unique position outside the mainstream of French musical life, Satie invented a stripped-down, anti-Romantic piano style of radical simplicity. His Gymnopedies, Gnossiennes, and Sarabandes from the 1880s anticipated Impressionism and Minimalism by decades. His later works — Embryons desseches, Sports et Divertissements, the Sonatine bureaucratique — are marked by irony, absurdist humor, and a deliberate avoidance of the picturesque.
