Biography

Domenico Scarlatti (1685–1757) was an Italian Baroque composer now celebrated for his 555 keyboard sonatas. Born in Naples on the same year as Bach and Handel, he spent most of his career in the service of the Portuguese and Spanish royal families, where he composed the vast majority of his sonatas for his pupil Princess Maria Barbara of Portugal, later Queen of Spain. He published only one collection in his lifetime — the Essercizi per Gravicembalo (1739), containing thirty sonatas — while the remaining 525 circulated in manuscript. His sonatas are innovative single-movement binary-form works that blend Italian counterpoint with Spanish folk idioms, guitar textures, and daring harmonic excursions, anticipating the Classical style.
