Biography

A Soviet and later German composer whose polystylistic approach — combining tonal, atonal, serial, and quotational elements simultaneously — made him one of the most distinctive voices of the late 20th century. His three piano sonatas, piano quintet, and piano concerto are major works. His Piano Quintet (1972-76), written in memory of his mother, is one of the most emotionally devastating chamber works of the century.
