Biography

One of the most literary of composers, Schumann conceived his piano works in relation to poetry, criticism, and his own inner life. Major works include Papillons, Carnaval, Davidsbundlertanze, Kinderszenen, Kreisleriana, the Fantasy in C major (Op. 17), and the Piano Concerto in A minor. His writing for the instrument is characterized by complex inner voices, polyrhythm, and a deeply personal Romantic expressivity. He also founded the Neue Zeitschrift fur Musik and was an influential critic who championed Chopin and Brahms.
