Biography

One of the great composers of the Soviet era, who worked under constant political pressure. His 24 Preludes and Fugues (Op. 87) — composed after hearing Tatiana Nikolayeva perform Bach's Well-Tempered Clavier — are the most significant homage to Bach in the 20th century. His two piano sonatas, piano quintet, two piano concertos, and early Aphorisms complete a significant piano output marked by biting wit and suppressed tragedy.
