Biography

The founder of Czech nationalist music, Smetana is best known for the orchestral cycle Ma vlast and the opera The Bartered Bride, but he was also a significant piano composer. His two books of Czech Dances (1877-79) are the most frequently performed of his keyboard works, distilling the energy and character of Bohemian folk dances into concert pieces. His Polkas Op. 7, 8, and 12 and the fantasy Macbeth and the Witches display considerable Lisztian ambition. He composed his final works while completely deaf.
