Biography

A Catalan monk at the Escorial monastery, Soler was the most important Iberian keyboard composer after Scarlatti, who was likely his teacher. He composed over 120 keyboard sonatas that blend Scarlattian brilliance with a distinctly Spanish harmonic palette, featuring bold modulations and rhythmic vitality drawn from Iberian folk music. His fandangos and sonatas in unusual keys are particularly celebrated.
