Biography

The most important Dutch composer of the late Renaissance, Sweelinck served as organist of the Oude Kerk in Amsterdam for over 40 years. Known as the "maker of German organists," he taught many of the founders of the North German organ school, including Samuel Scheidt and Heinrich Scheidemann. His keyboard works — toccatas, fantasias, echo fantasias, and chorale variations — bridge the Italian and English keyboard traditions with the emerging North German style that would culminate in Buxtehude and Bach.
