Biography
Japan's most celebrated classical composer, Takemitsu developed a highly personal style drawing on French Impressionism, Japanese aesthetics of ma (negative space), and contemporary European techniques. His piano works — Rain Tree Sketch I and II, Les yeux clos I and II, For Away — are exquisite in their attention to sonority and silence. He was also a prolific film composer, scoring over 100 Japanese films.
