Biography

The only pianist of his era considered a serious rival to Liszt, Thalberg invented the three-hand illusion technique — placing a singing melody in the middle register with the thumb while both hands executed elaborate arpeggios above and below — that astonished audiences across Europe. His Fantasy on Moses (Op. 33) is the signature work. A famous 1837 Paris contest between Liszt and Thalberg was declared a draw by Princess Belgiojoso.
