Biography

The most radical miniaturist of the Second Viennese School, Webern developed an aphoristic style of extreme concentration in which a single note or interval can carry entire structural weight. His Variations for Piano Op. 27 (1936) and the earlier piano pieces (Opp. 11, 33) compress vast expressive range into a few dozen bars. His influence on post-war serialism — particularly Boulez and Stockhausen — was defining. He was killed by an accidental discharge in 1945.
