Biography

A student of Leopold Mozart and Michael Haydn, Woelfl was celebrated as one of the few pianists considered a peer of Beethoven in virtuosity. His large-scale sonatas, particularly the Non plus ultra (Op. 41), pushed the technical limits of the instrument of his day. He spent his later career in Paris and London, where his elegant style found a receptive audience.
