Anglaise

Baroque works

Definition

A Baroque dance movement in binary form with a brisk duple meter, of English origin. It appears occasionally as an optional movement in keyboard suites, particularly in German Baroque music.

Historical Context

The anglaise (literally 'English dance') was adopted by German Baroque composers as an optional suite movement. Bach includes it in the Third French Suite (BWV 814). It is related to the contredanse and shares the energetic character of English country dances of the period.
