Concerto

Romantic works

Definition

A large-scale work for solo instrument and orchestra, typically in three movements (fast–slow–fast). The piano concerto is one of the most significant genres of the Classical and Romantic eras, combining the expressive potential of the solo piano with the colour and power of the orchestra.

Historical Context

The piano concerto demands both technical command and the ability to project through an orchestra. Dvořák's Piano Concerto in G minor (Op.33) is noted for its unusual treatment of the solo part, which often takes an interior, chamber-music role rather than the virtuoso prominence typical of the Romantic concerto.
