Courante

Baroque works

Definition

A Baroque dance in triple or compound duple meter, typically fast and flowing. One of the four core movements of the Baroque keyboard suite, following the allemande.

Historical Context

Two distinct varieties exist: the French courante in compound metre (3/2 or 6/4) with rhythmic ambiguity, and the Italian corrente in a faster, simpler triple metre. Bach's suites use both types. Godowsky's Courante in E minor (Op.12 No.3) is an example in the style of the Baroque original.
