Étude
Romantic works
Definition
A study piece designed to develop a specific technical skill — passage work, octaves, trills, voicing, pedaling — while also functioning as a complete musical statement.
Historical Context
The étude as a concert form was created by Chopin, whose Op. 10 and Op. 25 collections transformed studies into works of profound artistic value. Liszt's Transcendental Études pushed technical demands further. The 20th century produced landmark sets by Debussy, Scriabin, Ligeti, and Messiaen, each redefining what constitutes a piano 'problem' worth solving.
