Minuet

Baroque works

Definition

A stately dance in triple meter, moderate in tempo, typically in ternary form with a contrasting trio section. The standard third movement of a Classical-era sonata or symphony.

Historical Context

The minuet was the dominant social dance of the French court and remained in concert music through the early Classical period. Haydn and Mozart used it extensively before Beethoven replaced it with the faster and more unpredictable scherzo.
