Moment Musical

Romantic works

Definition

A short, self-contained piano piece capturing a fleeting mood or impression. The plural form 'Moments Musicaux' was established by Schubert's Op. 94 set.

Historical Context

Schubert coined the term (in French despite being Viennese) for six short character pieces (D. 780). Rachmaninoff wrote six more (Op. 16) in a more virtuosic Romantic vein. The title implies something spontaneously captured rather than formally constructed.
