Paraphrase / Fantasy Transcription

Romantic works

Definition

A virtuosic piano work based on operatic or orchestral material, going beyond literal transcription to elaborate, embellish, and transform the source into a concert showpiece in its own right.

Historical Context

The operatic paraphrase was perfected by Liszt, who elevated the genre from mere transcription into a compositional form with independent artistic value. His Reminiscences de Don Juan (1841) and Rigoletto paraphrase (1859) recompose their operatic sources, adding new counterpoint, harmonic elaboration, and pianistic brilliance. The form served both as homage to opera and as a vehicle for demonstrating the piano's orchestral capabilities. Other composers including Thalberg, Herz, and later Godowsky contributed to the genre, but Liszt's examples remain the canonical repertoire.
