Partita

Baroque works

Definition

In Bach's usage, a synonym for suite — a set of dance movements. The term also refers to a set of variations in earlier Baroque practice.

Historical Context

Bach's six Partitas for keyboard (BWV 825–830) are the most expansive and technically demanding of his dance suites, each preceded by an elaborate opening movement (Prelude, Sinfonia, Fantasia, Overture, Praeambulum, or Toccata).
