Passepied

Baroque works

Definition

A quick, light Baroque dance in triple meter (3/8 or 6/8), faster than the minuet and with a lively, skipping character.

Historical Context

The passepied was a dance from Brittany that became fashionable at the French court. Bach included examples in his keyboard suites. Debussy's Passepied from the Suite bergamasque demonstrates the form's revival in the Impressionist era.
