Pavane
Renaissance works
Definition
A slow, processional dance in duple meter, stately and dignified in character. Often paired with a faster galliard.
Historical Context
The pavane was the most formal of Renaissance and early Baroque court dances. Ravel's Pavane pour une infante défunte (1899) is the most-performed modern example, written in an elegantly archaic style. Fauré's Pavane for orchestra and chorus is another major work in the form.
