Polonaise

Baroque works

Definition

A stately Polish processional dance in triple meter with a characteristic rhythmic figure featuring a short note on the third beat. Piano polonaises often combine grandeur and heroic energy.

Historical Context

The polonaise appeared in keyboard music as early as Bach and Handel but was transformed by Chopin into a symbol of Polish national identity and aristocratic splendor. His Polonaise in A♭ major (Op. 53) is the archetype of the heroic concert polonaise.
