Definition

A free-form, episodic single-movement work typically marked by contrasting sections and a heroic or nationalistic character. Often improvisatory in feel despite being fully notated.

Historical Context

Liszt's Hungarian Rhapsodies popularized the term for piano music, drawing on Romani and Hungarian folk material. Brahms's rhapsodies (Op. 79) are more restrained and Classical in structure. The 20th century saw nationalistic rhapsodies from Enescu, Gershwin, and Bartók.
