Sonatina

Classical works

Definition

A short or simplified sonata, typically lighter in character and technically less demanding than a full sonata. Often used as a pedagogical form.

Historical Context

Sonatinas by Clementi, Kuhlau, and Dussek have been standard teaching repertoire since the Classical era. Ravel's Sonatine (1905) subverted the form's simplicity, delivering a harmonically sophisticated work of considerable difficulty despite its title.
