Suite

Baroque works

Definition

A collection of dance movements in related keys, typically including an allemande, courante, sarabande, and gigue, with optional dances inserted between the sarabande and gigue.

Historical Context

The keyboard suite crystallised in the late 17th century in the work of French and German composers including Froberger, Pachelbel, and Handel before reaching its summit in Bach's English Suites, French Suites, and Partitas. Each dance retains its characteristic metre and tempo while being stylised beyond its original functional purpose.
