Waltz

Romantic works

Definition

A dance in triple meter (3/4) with a characteristic ONE-two-three rhythmic emphasis. Piano waltzes range from simple dance pieces to elaborate concert works.

Historical Context

The waltz supplanted the minuet as the dominant social dance of the early 19th century, reflecting a shift toward closer physical contact between partners. Schubert, Chopin, Brahms, and Ravel all contributed significantly to the concert waltz repertoire. Ravel's La Valse (1920) transformed the form into a symbolic meditation on collapse.
