voicing

English instrument

Definition

The technique of balancing the relative loudness of notes within a chord or texture so that a particular voice (usually the melody) projects above the others.

Interpretive Guidance

The most important skill in mature piano playing. The thumb (melody) side of the hand naturally weighs more; the inner voices and accompaniment must be actively suppressed. Practice voicing by playing the chord with one finger at full voice while imagining the others whispering.
