arm weight

English instrument

Definition

The use of the natural weight of the arm — relaxed and falling freely — rather than finger striking to produce tone.

Interpretive Guidance

Tension is the enemy of tone quality. A relaxed arm falling into the key produces a warmer, more singing sound than a percussive finger attack. The elbow leads, the wrist absorbs, and the finger simply channels the weight.
