evenness

English instrument

Definition

The quality of equal finger strength, speed, and tone across all five fingers in a passage.

Interpretive Guidance

The 4th finger and 5th finger are naturally weaker; passages that expose these fingers (e.g., trills between 4 and 5) require targeted slow practice. Unevenness in rapid passages is the most audible technical flaw.
