touch
English instrument
Definition
The manner in which a pianist's finger makes contact with the key — encompassing speed of key descent, weight applied, and point of contact.
Interpretive Guidance
The piano's sound begins the moment the key is depressed. A slower key descent (more weight, less striking) produces a warmer tone; a faster descent (more striking) produces a brighter, more percussive tone. Touch is the primary tool of tonal colour at the piano.
