Definition

In sonata form, the opening section in which the principal themes are introduced, typically with a tonic theme and a contrasting theme in a related key.

Interpretive Guidance

The blueprint of the movement. In performance, the exposition repeat is usually observed in sonatas and chamber music but sometimes omitted in concertos. Each theme should have a distinct character that the listener can hold onto.
