basso continuo

Italian era

Definition

A Baroque harmonic foundation consisting of a bass line with figures (figured bass) indicating the harmony to be realised by a keyboard player and low string instrument.

Interpretive Guidance

Even in solo keyboard music, awareness of the continuo tradition is important. Much Baroque keyboard writing contains an implied bass line that must be kept audible and steady while the upper voices ornament freely.
