affect

German era

Definition

The Baroque doctrine of the Affections (Affektenlehre) — the idea that each piece or movement should express a single, unified emotional state.

Interpretive Guidance

A slow, chromatic descent in the bass might convey grief; dotted rhythms might convey grandeur. Baroque performers were expected to identify the primary affect and sustain it throughout the piece without emotional variety.
