prelude

French/Universal era

Definition

An introductory piece, often improvisatory in character, preceding a fugue or dance suite in Baroque practice.

Interpretive Guidance

In Baroque performance, some preludes were understood as loosely timed, quasi-improvised pieces. The distinction from a written-out improvisation is deliberately blurred. This flexibility should be felt in performance.
