rondo

French era

Definition

A form in which a recurring main theme (the refrain) alternates with contrasting episodes: A-B-A-C-A or similar.

Interpretive Guidance

Common as a finale in Classical sonatas and concertos. The refrain's return should feel like a homecoming — each episode builds tension that the refrain resolves. Tempo and character should be consistent across refrains.
