portamento

Italian era

Definition

A smooth glide from one note to the next — in piano writing, a legato touch with a slight weight on the point of arrival, imitating the vocal or string portamento.

Interpretive Guidance

Cannot be literally achieved on piano as on voice or strings, but is approximated through careful touch and minimal separation between notes of different pitch. Romantic performers used portamento freely as an expressive device.
