whole-tone scale

French era

Definition

A scale built entirely of whole steps (six pitches before returning to the octave), lacking the dominant-tonic pull of diatonic scales.

Interpretive Guidance

Associated above all with Debussy. The whole-tone scale creates a floating, directionless harmonic atmosphere with no leading tone to pull toward resolution. Passages in this scale should be played with a sense of suspension and weightlessness.
