parallel motion

Universal era

Definition

The movement of two or more voices in the same direction by identical intervals.

Interpretive Guidance

Forbidden in classical counterpoint (parallel fifths and octaves), parallel motion was deliberately exploited by Debussy and Ravel for its blurred, resonant effect. Moving chord shapes across the keyboard as units rather than resolving them individually.
