modal harmony

Universal era

Definition

Harmonic language based on the ancient Greek modes (Dorian, Phrygian, Lydian, Mixolydian, etc.) rather than the major/minor tonal system.

Interpretive Guidance

Impressionist composers used modal harmonies for archaic, exotic, or dreamlike colouring. Dorian and Lydian modes are especially common. The characteristic interval of each mode (the raised fourth in Lydian, the flat seventh in Mixolydian) defines its flavour.
