stretto

Italian work

Definition

A close imitative passage in a fugue in which the subject entries overlap — each new entry begins before the previous one has finished.

Interpretive Guidance

Stretto intensifies contrapuntal density and creates a sense of urgency. In the WTC Fugues, stretto is a primary development technique. Each voice must be clearly articulated even as they pile upon each other.
