In the evening — the first of the Fantasiestücke Op. 12, with a characteristic polyrhythmic texture (3 against 2).
Interpretive Guidance
The right hand plays in compound triplet time against the left hand's duple time. The two layers must be independently rhythmic; neither should assimilate the other. The effect is a gentle rocking between two simultaneous times.
