rubato

Italian universal

Definition

Robbed time — flexible tempo in which the performer freely accelerates and lingers within a phrase.

Interpretive Guidance

The art of expressive timing. In Chopin's usage (per accounts of his teaching), the melody floats freely while the accompaniment maintains a steady pulse. In Romantic practice more broadly, the entire texture may flex together. Avoid mechanical metric displacement.
