Mordente

Italian era

Definition

A mordent; a rapid alternation between a main note and the note immediately below it. One of the most common ornaments in Baroque keyboard music.

Interpretive Guidance

In Scarlatti, mordents are typically a single rapid lower-neighbor alternation. Keep them neat and rhythmically integrated rather than imposing Romantic agogic weight.
