Prestissimo

Italian universal

Definition

Extremely fast; the most extreme standard tempo marking, surpassing Presto. Used by Scarlatti in several late sonatas including K. 517 in D minor.

Interpretive Guidance

At prestissimo, melodic clarity must not be sacrificed for speed. Practice with extreme rhythmic precision so that the maximum tempo remains perfectly controlled rather than merely busy.
