gai

French era

Definition

Gay, cheerful, high-spirited. A tempo or character indication in French scores calling for brightness and energy. Stronger than joyeux (joyful) in implying a light, bouncing quality.

Interpretive Guidance

Think of a light-footed dance rather than a heavy celebration. Staccato notes should bounce; phrasing should feel spontaneous. Do not mistake this marking for mere quickness — the character is as important as the speed.
