night music

English work

Definition

Bartók's term for a texture he pioneered in Out of Doors (1926) and many subsequent works: a static, atmospheric nocturnal soundscape built from irregular chromatic clusters, trills, and motifs in different registers that evoke insects, frogs, and other nocturnal sounds. The texture has no developmental direction — it simply exists, like a soundscape.

Interpretive Guidance

In Night Music passages, resist any sense of pulse or forward motion. Keep dynamics very soft and layered; no voice should dominate. The chromatic clusters and trills should shimmer rather than articulate. Think of the piano as an ensemble of quiet, overlapping natural sounds in the dark.
