españolismo

Spanish era

Definition

The aesthetic programme of Albéniz, Granados, and Falla: the incorporation of Spanish folk idioms — flamenco, regional dances, Moorish scales, guitar sonority — into the framework of European concert music. The movement was inspired by Felipe Pedrell's call for a national Spanish music rooted in folk tradition. Albéniz's Iberia represents its fullest expression: folk spirit realised through the most sophisticated post-Romantic harmonic language.
