polyrhythm in Iberia
English work
Definition
In Iberia, Albéniz frequently layers two or three independent rhythmic streams simultaneously — a melody in one metre, an accompaniment in another, and a bass pedal in a third. Triana, for instance, superimposes a 3-beat sevillanas melody over a 6/8 left-hand accompaniment. This creates a cross-rhythm density comparable to the most demanding Chopin Études, requiring absolute independence between the hands.
Interpretive Guidance
Practise each rhythmic layer separately at slow tempo before combining them. The melody must sing above the rhythmic ostinato without rushing or being swamped. Use arm weight to project the melody; keep the accompaniment light but steady. Do not try to make the layers line up — the cross-rhythm tension is the expressivity.
